Something new and exciting is brewing on the Instagram front! Fundraising on Instagram just became a more affirmed reality with Facebook’s latest announcement.
On Thursday morning, Facebook announced that Instagram is working to develop a tool for nonprofits allowing them to take charitable donations right through the app. This is a game changer!
The tool is exclusive to Stories, the feature that encourages people to share photos and videos that expire 24 hours after posting. The feature will be launched in the next few months.
It was reported in November 2018 that Facebook’s donation tools were used to raise $1 billion for charities and individual causes including medical needs. Giving Tuesday in November also helped raise $125 million for nonprofits on Facebook.
Emily Dalton Smith, director of social good at Facebook let the public know that Facebook would cover the credit card processing fees and costs of operating the new Instagram tool so 100% of the contributions are sent directly to the cause. How cool is that!?
Now, what does this mean for your organization?
This is FANTASTIC news.
You will no longer have to ask for donations through the “link in your bio”, adding a link on your website itself; you will be able to use a very specific sticker in Stories similar to adding your location or a hashtag to a Story, therefore embedding an easy-to-use donate button.
All that’s required is confirming that your 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status is in “good standing” with the Internal Revenue Service. Both individuals and causes will be able to use the donation sticker and nonprofits can pre-set donation amounts starting at $5.
Stay tuned to the upcoming progress of this project – I’ll be sharing updates on my social media as a release date nears!
