Monthly giving – also called recurring giving or sustainer giving – is when a donor commits to contribute a fixed amount every month, charged automatically to their credit card or bank account.
For donors, it’s convenient and low-friction. For your organization, it’s transformative.

Here’s what changes when you have a healthy sustainer program:
Every nonprofit with a donor file should have one. But the urgency is most acute for organizations operating under $3 million annually, where unpredictable revenue hits hardest. You don’t need a large team. What you need is a framework, the right tools, and a commitment to starting.

Your monthly giving program is not a checkbox on a donation form. It’s a product. Treat it like one – with a dedicated marketing budget, team attention, and a name that creates recognition and community.
The naming process is one of the most important steps most organizations underinvest in. In my mastermind, we’ve named 15+ programs together, including The Roots, The Beacon, The Matriarchy, Joyraisers, and The Spring.
Your naming brainstorm starts with: ‘I joined ______.’ How does that sound?
Give your program a dedicated landing page that exists solely to invite people into your monthly giving community. Your donation form should default to monthly. Your CTA should not say ‘Donate’ – it should say ‘Join The Movement’ or ‘Take a Seat at The Table.’
When the Tim Tebow Foundation did a donation optimization audit, an embedded tool with a monthly conversion pop-up increased their conversion rates from 3-4% to 11%. That single change at scale is transformative.
Before you build your audience, find your congregation. Your best first sustainers are already in your donor file. The copy you use to call them in should speak to their identity, not just your need.
If you don’t ask, the program won’t grow. Period. You need an ‘always on’ strategy combined with 2-3 tentpole moments per year where you go all-in.
The Adventure Project generated 100 new monthly donors in a single Labor Day campaign by distributing ‘You’re Hired’ cards to their Founder Circle. Simple, creative, and perfectly timed.
Retention is the cornerstone. The organizations I return to again and again – BB4CK at 90.7%, The Water Promise Circle at 95%, IJM UK at under 1% annual churn – all treat their monthly donors like family, not funders.
Track five metrics:
Review monthly. Share a simplified version quarterly with your board.
30 sustainers at $25/month = $9,000/year. 100 sustainers at $30 average = $36,000/year. Each cohort compounds the last. This is not aspirational. It’s arithmetic.
