In honor of Black Philanthropy Month, this podcast episode shines a light on the powerful work of the Black Coalition for Safe Motherhood (BCFSM), led by Dr. Leslie Farrington and Khadejah Stegall. Their mission is clear: equip Black birthing people and their families with the advocacy tools to navigate healthcare with dignity, confidence, and safety.
BCFSM’s ACTT framework: Ask questions, Claim your space, Trust your body, Tell your story, empowers families to speak up in medical settings, reduce harmful communication breakdowns, and improve maternal health outcomes.
When BCFSM launched its monthly giving program, it marked a shift from relying mainly on grants to cultivating individual donors. As Operations Manager, Khadejah Stegall shared:
“The biggest shift for us was definitely seeing people who decided to give their hard-earned money, give testimonies behind why they decided to become a donor. Our first recurring donor was a nurse who had seen firsthand how essential advocacy is.”
Monthly giving, integrated into every email, event, and campaign, provides consistent funding for ACTT workshops and advocacy training. Their first big success? A Mother’s Day email campaign that brought in their very first recurring donor.
Launching a monthly giving program can feel overwhelming for small nonprofit teams but BCFSM streamlined their systems to make it manageable.
Using iDonate, the team consolidated donor management, automated communications, and connected their giving platform with Flowdesk for an engaging welcome email series.
Dr. Farrington noted how much easier it is now to communicate with supporters:
“It’s not just a webpage — it’s the storytelling, the automated emails, the ability to track donors in one place. It’s simplified everything for us.”
By integrating giving opportunities into their existing activities — newsletters, social posts, and free workshops, the team works smarter, not harder.
A major takeaway from this conversation is the power of storytelling in fundraising. BCFSM’s campaigns highlight why their work matters: safe, equitable birthing care for Black families.
As Khadejah explained:
“Even if you are not pregnant, you’ll learn advocacy skills that you can use for your own health journey, or to help a friend or family member. That’s one of the benefits of becoming a monthly donor.”
Through personal stories, impact-focused messaging, and ACT facilitator training opportunities, supporters feel connected to the mission and see tangible value in joining The Advocates, their monthly giving community.
BCFSM offers free monthly workshops, ACT facilitator training, and opportunities to join The Advocates as a recurring donor. Monthly giving ensures the organization can continue delivering life-saving education and advocacy training.
