When most young adults are finding their footing in their careers, Courtney Johnson was laying the foundation for a nonprofit that would transform the lives of cancer patients across the country. Inspired by her father’s battle with lung cancer, Johnson founded Culinary Care, an organization that brings nourishing meals to individuals fighting cancer.
One of Culinary Care’s most innovative initiatives has been their signature “cookoff” events. These interactive culinary experiences have proven to be more than just fundraisers – they’ve become powerful engagement tools that strengthen corporate partnerships.
Through hosting 20 of these unique events in 2024, Culinary Care has raised an impressive $300,000, demonstrating the potential of creative fundraising approaches.
The organization’s success extends beyond events. Culinary Care has cultivated a robust monthly giving program, The Line, now boasting over 200 dedicated donors.
This achievement stems from Johnson’s strategic approach to donor retention and community building. By partnering with local restaurants and maintaining strong personal connections with supporters, Culinary Care has created a sustainable model for long-term impact.
Johnson’s approach to leadership and storytelling stands out in the nonprofit sector. Her personal branding and authentic communication style have resonated deeply with donors and partners alike. By sharing her personal connection to the cause and maintaining transparency about the organization’s journey, she’s built trust and fostered lasting relationships with stakeholders.
What started as a daughter’s tribute to her father has evolved into a comprehensive support system for cancer patients. Culinary Care’s success story demonstrates how personal passion, innovative fundraising strategies, and authentic leadership can combine to create meaningful social impact.
