I believe positive stories of change can transform our world to be a better place. That’s why I teach nonprofits how to use social media ads to attract potential supporters to their cause and create sustainable giving models by building monthly giving programs for everyone to become a philanthropist.

Quick answer: Nonprofits don’t struggle to launch a monthly giving program because they lack information. Data from over 1,000 webinar registrants shows the real blockers are an internal approval bottleneck, a capacity gap on small teams, and an identity shift that hasn’t happened yet — organizations still treating monthly giving as a task instead of the foundation of their fundraising strategy.
If you work in nonprofit fundraising, you already know why monthly giving matters. Monthly donors give more over time. They stick around longer. They make your revenue easier to predict. You’ve heard this in webinars, read it in books, probably said it in a board meeting yourself.
And yet, for most organizations, the program still isn’t built.
That’s the exact thing I wanted to dig into after wrapping two live webinars this summer, both called “How to Walk into End of Year with Your Monthly Giving Program Finally Built.” Instead of just presenting a framework and sending people home with a slide deck, I walked registrants through the first three steps of my five-step monthly giving framework live, using the same prompts that live inside my Monthly Giving Builder tool. Real inputs, not warm-up questions — things like what your organization does, who your monthly giving super fan is, and what someone becomes the moment they say yes to a recurring gift.
People typed real answers into the chat in real time. One person wrote, “$35 a month sends a girl to secondary school for a year.” Another wrote, “When you become a monthly donor, you become a sustainer who keeps the lights on for families in crisis.” That’s real language, built live, in the room.
Before each webinar, I asked everyone registering one question: where are you in your monthly giving journey right now? Here’s what came back:
Add that up, and more than half the room at a webinar specifically about building a monthly giving program didn’t have one.
After the webinars, I asked people who didn’t move forward with the Monthly Giving Builder what got in the way. 41% said price, 21% said timing, and a chunk mentioned needing board approval or not being sure it was the right fit. But when I asked people to elaborate, the answers all pointed to the same thing: I’ve been to a lot of webinars, I’ve read the books, I know monthly giving matters. And still, no program.
That told me something important. This sector already knows monthly giving works. The information has been absorbed. What’s missing is the bridge between knowing and doing.
Most webinars — including the ones I’ve run in the past — hand people a framework, some inspiration, maybe a template. Then everyone closes their laptop and goes back to the grant deadline, the board meeting, the event in September. Monthly giving goes back on the list.
That’s exactly the moment I built these webinars to interrupt. So instead of saying “here’s the framework, go build it later,” I said “open a notes doc right now and write your answer to this question with me.” Instead of asking people to name their program something identity-based on their own time, I asked them to type an actual name into the chat, right then, and get feedback on the spot. That’s the bridge most resources never build.
Here’s something I want to pull back the curtain on, because I think it’s genuinely useful for anyone running programs like this.
I did this analysis using Claude, Anthropic’s AI, connected through MCP — integrations that link Claude directly to your existing tools, like your CRM, email platform, and donation software. Instead of exporting a report, uploading a file, and then asking questions, you just ask the question, and the answer comes straight from your live data.
Someone in my Sustainer Slack community, a free space for nonprofits building monthly giving programs, recently posted about doing the same thing on their end. They built a Claude project and connected it to Salesforce, Clavico, GoFundMe Pro, and their email platform through custom MCP connectors. Their words: “We can pull any report, query, list, or insight from our whole donor management stack with a single spoken sentence.” It’s happening right now, on small teams, because someone decided to connect their tools.
For me, that meant analyzing program status, purchase behavior, and feedback from more than 1,000 webinar registrants in an afternoon — work that used to take days, if I’d known how to do it at all. That analysis is what led me to three specific reasons monthly giving stays stuck.
1. The approval bottleneck. A meaningful share of people who didn’t move forward said they needed to convince an executive director or board first. For a lot of development professionals, this is an organizational culture problem: they believe in monthly giving, but the institution hasn’t caught up with them yet.
2. The capacity trap. One-person development teams, staff fundraising between other jobs, organizations heading into blackout periods before a big fall event — these are the small shops that need monthly giving the most, because they’re running on transactional, one-time revenue. They’re also the ones with the least room to build something new. January hits, and the program is back at zero.
3. The identity shift. This is the one I think is true and least talked about. There’s a real difference between an organization that does monthly giving and an organization where monthly giving is the foundation of how it operates. The leaders who make that shift stop adding monthly giving to the to-do list and start building their whole strategy around it. That move from doing to being is what actually closes the gap between knowing and building. The organizations in my community who’ve made that shift have the same team, the same bandwidth — and they’ve seen real growth. What changed was the structure and the identity behind the work.
So here’s where I land after going through all of this: most organizations already know they should be asking for monthly gifts. The bridge between knowing and doing is just longer than any webinar, book, or framework can close on its own — unless that framework actually does the work with you.
That’s why I built the Monthly Giving Builder. It’s designed to run you through the framework: generate the outputs, hand you the document to walk into your board meeting with, give you the landing page copy, give you an email sequence you can send next week.
If you want to start even smaller — one thing you can do this week that actually moves the needle — I released a $17 product called Send This to Your List This Week. It’s a done-for-you monthly giving invitation email built on identity-based language. You answer three questions, personalize it to your organization, and send it. That’s it. One email, this week. You’ll find it linked in the show notes, along with the Monthly Giving Audit and the full Builder if you want to go deeper.
You’ve had the information for a while now. What closes the gap is a system that does the work with you. So let’s get you one. It exists — and you can build a strong, successful, recurring giving community for your organization, starting now.
Why don’t more nonprofits have a monthly giving program? Data from over 1,000 nonprofit webinar registrants shows it’s rarely a knowledge gap — most fundraisers already know monthly giving builds sustainable revenue. The real blockers are an internal approval bottleneck, limited capacity on small teams, and an identity shift that hasn’t happened yet at the organizational level.
What is the “identity shift” in monthly giving? It’s the difference between an organization that runs monthly giving as one tactic among many and an organization that builds its entire fundraising strategy around recurring giving as the foundation. Nonprofits that make this shift tend to see significant growth without adding staff or budget.
How can nonprofits use AI to analyze fundraising data? Tools like Claude can connect directly to a nonprofit’s CRM, email platform, and donation software through MCP connectors, allowing staff to ask questions about donor behavior and program performance directly from live data — without exporting reports or manually combining spreadsheets first.
What’s a good first step to launch a monthly giving program? Start with one concrete action, like sending a single monthly giving invitation email built on identity-based language (“when you give monthly, you become…”) rather than trying to build a full program launch all at once.
